WHAT IS A JOLLY JAR?
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE JOLLY JAR COMPETITION IS ONLY OPEN TO MAUNGAWHAU PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS
Each year at the Maungawhau School Fair, one class is assigned as their stall, the "Jolly Jars". These are literally jars (or small containers) filled with "stuff", decorated or prettied up for sale, sort of like a visual lucky dip. They are very popular with the kids at the fair as they are sold for a low price, between $1-$5 depending on their contents.
McDonalds sponsors some aspects of the Fair and in past years have provided the container for each child to use to make their Jolly Jar. There is no obligation on your family to either make a Jolly Jar, nor to use the container provided - it's up to you.
However, it can be a fun holiday project to get your children and friends together to make the jars, (remind the kids they are making them to be sold!!) and some ideas in the past that have been popular include:
- ingredients and a simple recipe for biscuits, or hot chocolate
- garden project - soil and a packet of seeds
- hair ties
- tiny toys
- bouncy balls
- pencils, pens and a notebook
- template and instructions for Christmas decorations or cards
Some families are likely to clear out the toy cupboard for items to fill their jars, others may purchase things from the $2 shop, some may bake or create or sew or draw…. the possibilities are endless.
As an incentive you will see prizes are on offer for the most creative contribution and the most prolific class!
PLEASE don't donate junk in the jars (i.e. broken things) as we do want the community coming to our Fair to feel they are getting nice things for the money they spend.
For parents who are new to our school (and our teachers!) we appreciate that the Fair can seem overwhelming - please don't feel pressured into donating something for every request that is made, just choose what you can contribute time or goods to, and you will be appreciated. We all have years ahead of us at the school to continue to be involved and contribute!
